How to Prepare Your Work Trucks for the Summer Heat

Summer is here, and so is the blazing sun. Are your work vehicles in prime working order for the hot season? If you run a demolition company in Kansas City, there are some things you can do to prepare your work trucks to take on the summer heat. Read on to learn more!

Tune up your trucks

Although your work trucks need regular tune-ups throughout the year, make sure at least one tune-up is done before or during the summer season. This gives better assurance that your trucks are not going to break down in the middle of a hot summer day or be out of commission when you need them to complete jobs. Make tune-ups a part of your regular work truck maintenance routine.

Install window tint

Like cars, some heavy duty work trucks can benefit from window tinting. Tint keeps harmful UV rays from coming through the windows, causing the interior to heat up and leading to sunburns for drivers. Depending on what your work trucks are used for, you might want to go with a lighter tint to ensure it doesn’t obstruct the view of drivers or workers on the job site.

Check refrigerant levels

When you take your work trucks into a mechanic shop or the technician comes to your fleet lot, they will likely check all fluid levels. In summer, it’s extremely important that the refrigerant levels in the AC compressors in all your work trucks get checked and refilled. Have it checked whether or not the AC is currently cold or weak. Refrigerant becomes depleted over time, especially when trucks are driven a lot in areas that experience extra long, very hot summers.

Test truck ACs

Before and after you get your trucks’ refrigerant levels checked, be sure to test out the air conditioners. Leave the AC on for a few minutes, feeling for coolness and airflow strength. Make sure all the air settings from low to high are working properly, and that the air doesn’t smell strange. Don’t leave your team to melt in the heat! Call your truck mechanic to perform a thorough inspection of any trucks with questionable ACs right away.

Inspect weather stripping

Your work trucks could be working as they should—the AC may be cool and the engine may be strong. But to ensure a cool interior temperature all summer long, the weather stripping that runs around truck windows and doors must be in tip-top shape. This material helps to keep the hot summer air outside and the conditioned air inside. Unfortunately, as weather stripping begins to age and is exposed to the elements, it will start to deteriorate or peel away from the frame of the window or door. The seal can break and let in hot outside air, which means discomfort and the inability to control the temperature inside your truck.

Here at Midland Wrecking Inc., all our work trucks are well maintained and ready to take on your demolition project. Let us be the first demolition company in Kansas City you call!
