Tips for Staying Cool While Working Outside

The summer sun can be a welcome sight for many, but it can also create uncomfortable conditions for people who spend time working outside. Working in the heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can also lead to heat illness, which can be very dangerous for workers. In order to avoid heat illness while working outside during the summer, simply follow a few tips from a demolition contractor in Kansas City that will keep you cool, comfortable and safe:

  • Drink water frequently: This may be the most obvious tip for staying cool, but it’s definitely worth mentioning again. Drinking water is key to staying hydrated and cool while you are working outside on a hot day. As a general rule, it is recommended that, during moderate outdoor activity, a worker should drink one cup of water for every 15 to 20 minutes of working. A dehydrated person will be unable to regulate their body temperature as they should, and they will be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
  • Restore your electrolytes: When you are in the heat, you begin to sweat in order to cool down. Sweating depletes the body’s electrolytes, which can cause a person to begin showing symptoms of dehydration and heat illness. While you can restore these electrolytes by drinking sports drinks, you can generally maintain a good balance of electrolytes simply by eating regular meals and snacking on salty foods.
  • Take regular breaks: Even with regular drinks of water and snacking, it is still possible for workers to become dehydrated and overheated. Taking regular breaks is important to prevent heat illness. In addition to stopping work at regular intervals, it’s also important to take a break if you begin to feel faint, dizzy, nauseous or notice any other signs of heat exhaustion. Try to take your break in a shaded or air conditioned location, and make sure to drink water and snack on salty foods to stay hydrated and restore your electrolytes.
  • Try to work during cooler times of the day: If possible, it is best to work during the early morning, when it is cooler outside. Starting work when it is early will minimize the amount of time spent working in the direct sunlight and can give you much more time in cool weather to work in. Working when it’s cool can also make you more productive, since you won’t need to take as many breaks to drink water preserve your energy.
